Best Valentine’s Day Treats to Buy at the Grocery Store | Sporked (1)

It’s happened to the best of us. February 14 rolls around and you realize you haven’t bought a dang thing for your significant other. Luckily, the grocery store is chock-full of Valentine’s Day goodies (and, hey, you needed to stop for eggs and coffee creamer anyway). Even if you’re on top of your Valentine’s Day game—or you just want to buy some things that taste good the next time you’re at the store—you’re going to want to stock up on the best Valentine’s Day treats to buy at the grocery store. Pay close attention and you may notice a theme here. (Chocolate. The theme is chocolate.)

Ghirardelli Dark Chocolate Raspberry Duet Hearts

Every February, the grocery store’s seasonal aisle becomes a Valentine’s Day wonderland—but not all seasonal treats are created equal. The Sporked crew taste tested a bunch of new-to-market Valentine’s Day candies, and these raspberry-jam filled hearts from Ghirardelli really knocked everyone’s socks off. As Sporked managing editor Gwynedd Stuart wrote in her roundup of the best Valentine’s Day candy in stores this year, “The chocolate is rich and dark with a bitterness that pairs brilliantly with the tart, gooey raspberry filling. This is real raspberry flavor, not phony raspberry flavor—you’ll even find crunchy little seeds in the filling.” Grab a bag of these while you can!

Brookside Pomegranate Dark Chocolate

Brookside Pomegranate Dark Chocolates are so good that I eat an entire bag in one sitting, despite the fact that I actually might hate dark chocolate. The filling inside the chocolate is tart and jelly-like, giving these a nice chew. The combo of fruit and chocolate is a signature Valentine’s Day pairing and, in this iteration, the slight bitterness of the dark chocolate works so well with the tart sweetness of the pomegranate. It’s a tasty matchup and I would literally cry if someone gave me these on Valentine’s Day (happy tears, of course).

Baker’s Real Milk Chocolate Dipping Chocolate

Did you know making chocolate-covered strawberries is as easy as punching a few buttons on the ol’ microwave? Take that, Edible Arrangements! If you want to surprise someone (or yourself) with some luscious strawberries delicious draped in chocolate, pick up a cup of Baker’s melting chocolates the next time you’re at the store. “It’s so rich and thick that it really clings to a dunked strawberry,” Gwynedd wrote in her ranking of the best chocolate for dipping strawberries. “Just throw it in the microwave for a couple of minutes, grab some ripe strawbs, and you have one of the tastiest (and low-effort) desserts imaginable.”

Theo Dark Chocolate Sea Salt

Now, I am not the biggest fan of dark chocolate, I’ll admit, but when it comes sprinkled with sea salt, it’s hard to say no. Sporked contributor Danny Palumbo wrote in our best dark chocolate ranking that Theo’s Sea Salt Dark Chocolate has a “perfect balance of bitter, sweet, and salty.” If you’re already into dark chocolate, go wild—this is the Valentine’s Day snack of choice. But if it’ll take a bit of convincing, trust me when I say that the sea salt flakes definitely make up for the bitterness. Theo, you get a pass.

Meiji Strawberry Apollo Chocolates

These Japanese chocolates are as good as they are adorable. They come in a pretty strawberry-emblazoned box and are shaped like little cones. The strawberry flavor (the top half of the little cone) is very creamy and the chocolate (the bottom half of the cone) leans dark. The two are an excellent pair and would make for a cute Valentine’s Day snack or thoughtful gift for the strawberry chocolate lover in your life. These cuties are worth the splurge.

Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Mini Heart Cookies

If Trader Joe’s is your grocery store of choice, stock up on a few boxes of these heart-shaped seasonal cookies. What are they exactly? “They are dark chocolate cookies enrobed in chocolate with tiny sprinkles. They are perfect,” senior writer Jordan Myrick explained in their ranking of Trader Joe’s Valentine’s Day treats. They’re crisp but soft and the chocolate coating isn’t too thick or too thin. They kind of reminded the crew of Thin Mints minus the mint.

Good & Gather Sea Salt Caramel Hot Cocoa

Valentine’s Day is about chocolate, yes, but it’s also about making people (yourself included) feel special. In the best hot chocolate ranking, the Sporked staff named Good & Gather Sea Salt Caramel hot chocolate the best flavored cocoa of the bunch. As far as hot chocolate goes, this is truly a stand out. Fixing someone a mug of this stuff is a sure way to make them feel special. With flavors this good, it’s certainly a romantic gesture.

Straus Family Creamery Organic Dutch Chocolate Ice Cream

Is any Valentine’s Day complete without chocolate ice cream? In her ranking of the best chocolate ice cream, Gwynedd put this pint above all the rest. The ice cream is incredibly creamy and a true delight for anyone who gets to taste it. It’s sure to put a smile on your love interest’s (extremely beautiful) face. Or, if you want to practice a little self-love, curl up with a big ol’ bowl of this and put on your favorite romcom (preferably one that’s more rom than com, so you don’t laugh too hard and accidentally vom).

Hershey’s Kisses Chocolate Dipped Strawberry

For Valentine’s Day this year, Hershey released a chocolate-dipped strawberry Kiss that is similar to the Vampire Kisses they released for Halloween. These are incredibly sweet, so there’s no need to worry about not being able to ration or share. You won’t be able to go to town on a whole bag. Inside the kiss is a red, fruity syrup that’s both tasty and on-theme for Valentine’s Day. This one is a good one if you’re into snacks with a fun holiday twist.
