COVID-19 Vaccines: Updated Research on Protection and Effectiveness (2025)

COVID-19 Vaccines Still Pack a Punch, But For How Long?

While the pandemic may feel like a distant memory for some, COVID-19 remains a serious threat, causing severe illness and hospitalizations. But here's the good news: a new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine confirms that updated COVID-19 vaccines are still our best defense.

And this is the part most people miss: the 2024-2025 vaccines offer robust protection, not just against infection, but also against emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and even death.

The study, led by Dr. Danyu Lin from the Gillings School, analyzed the effectiveness of these updated vaccines. Interestingly, they found that protection peaks around four weeks after vaccination, boasting a 44.7% shield against infection, 45.1% against ER visits, and a impressive 57.5% against hospitalization or death.

But here's where it gets controversial: while these numbers are encouraging, the protection does wane over time. By 20 weeks, effectiveness drops to 16.7% against infection, 39.1% against ER visits, and 34.0% against severe outcomes.

This raises the question: should we be considering annual COVID-19 vaccinations, especially for those at higher risk? The study suggests it might be beneficial, particularly for individuals with underlying health conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart disease.

Importantly, the study also found that the vaccines were equally effective against different Omicron subvariants, which is reassuring given the virus's constant evolution. This bodes well for the upcoming 2025-2026 vaccines, which target similar subvariants.

What does this mean for you? If you're 65 or older, or have underlying health conditions, getting your updated COVID-19 vaccine is crucial. In North Carolina, accessing these vaccines is easier than ever, available without a prescription at pharmacies statewide.

But what do you think? Should annual COVID-19 vaccinations become the norm? Is the waning immunity a cause for concern, or is the initial protection strong enough? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
