Gather Supplies

First, gather your supplies.

I like to keep craft paint on hand because we can use it for so many different projects.

We grabbed a cheap bag of little foam pumpkins from the store. Most grocery stores carry them in the seasonal section.

If you want the kids to use real pumpkins instead that would also work well with craft paint!

Just be sure to empty out the seeds and insides before you start painting.

You can use so many different things for paintbrushes if you don’t have any on hand. Try cotton swabs, they’re especially great for little kids.

Tape the Pumpkin Stems Before You Paint

Next, prepare the pumpkins to be painted.

I took tiny strips of painters tape and wrapped it around each pumpkin stem.

This keeps the paint from getting everywhere when your kids start painting their pumpkins.

They also make great little handles so your child can hold the pumpkin upside down and paint the bottoms, too.

Time for the Kids to Paint Their Rainbow Pumpkins!

You’re ready to paint!

For younger kids, I would recommend setting out just one color at a time.

We worked through the rainbow basically in ROY G BIV order. (That’s red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet!)

This is a great time to reinforce color concepts for younger preschoolers and toddlers!

As your kids paint their pumpkins, talk about other things that have that same color.

My daughter loved her pink pumpkin so much!

Set the pumpkins on a piece of paper towel to dry.

Depending on how thick the paint is, it should be dry in about 30 minutes to an hour.

Once your pumpkins are painted, it’s time to decide where to display them!

Don’t they make a cozy and colorful addition to our Fall decorations?

I love that we can reuse these year after year. These rainbow painted pumpkins are such an easy and cute kids Fall craft!

This is such an amazing activity for kids  they can learn something new from this. I would suggest combining your idea of “Rainbow Painted Pumpkins” by teaching kids the importance of numbers in everyday life with an artistic intent. How is that possible?
