Looking to send a little love this Valentine's Day? Skip the drugstore card aisle and make your own card for an extra-personal message. With just a handful of supplies, you can create a piece of paper art worth displaying. To get you started, we're giving you the step-by-step instructions for four different Valentine's Day cards that will impress their lucky recipients.

Heart Bouquet Card

Supplies

  • Blank card
  • Felt or foam heart stickers
  • Green paper
  • Ribbon
  • Glue
  • Scissors

Steps

  1. To make the stems, draw four straight lines on the green paper.
  2. Cut along lines.
  3. Tie ribbon into a bow.
  4. Trim the ends.
  5. Peel off the sticker backs and attach to the card.
  6. Lay out the stems and use a pencil to mark where they’ll intersect.
  7. Glue the stems to the paper. Use the pencil mark to make sure the stems are centered.
  8. Trim the stems so they’re even.
  9. Glue the bow in the center of the stems.

Threaded Heart Card

Supplies

  • Blank card
  • Thread or string
  • Needle
  • Awl or toothpick
  • Pencil
  • Tape
  • Scissors

Steps

  1. Use a pencil to draw or trace a heart on to the front of the card. (A cookie cutter makes a great template!)
  2. Unfold the card and place it on top of a scrap piece of cardboard.
  3. Use an awl, toothpick, or other sharp tool to poke evenly spaced holes along the pencil line.
  4. Erase the pencil line.
  5. Thread the needle. Starting at the top hole, insert the needle from the back of the card.
  6. Use a piece of tape to secure the loose end on the back.
  7. Flip the card over again and thread the needle through the hole at the opposite end of the heart.
  8. Keep threading, moving the needle over one hole at a time on the back.
  9. Continue until you’ve sewn through all the holes.
  10. Cut the thread and use another piece of tape to secure on the back.

Sending Love Card

Supplies

  • Blank card
  • Decorative paper
  • Miniature envelope template (you can find a regular-sized one online and scale it down before printing)
  • Pencil
  • Glue
  • Craft knife
  • Scissors

Steps

  1. To make the envelope, trace your template on the back of sheet of paper.
  2. Use a craft knife to cut along the pencil line.
  3. For the envelope liner, trace the center part of the template on another sheet of paper.
  4. Cut along the line.
  5. Fold in the envelope flaps.
  6. Place the liner on top and fold.
  7. Glue the liner to the inside of the envelope.
  8. Glue down the flaps.
  9. To make the hearts, fold a strip of decorative paper in half.
  10. Trace half hearts along the folded edge.
  11. Cut out with scissors.
  12. Glue the envelope to the front of the card.
  13. Apply glue to the folded edge of a heart and attach to the envelope.
  14. Glue the remaining hearts to the card.

Vintage Valentine Card

Supplies

  • Blank card
  • Decorative paper
  • Doilies, ribbons, and other embellishments—the more the better!
  • Craft knife
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Steps

  1. Trace the card on a sheet of paper and cut out.
  2. Trim the paper so it’s slightly smaller than the card.
  3. Create a scalloped edge with pinking shears.
  4. Glue a paper doily to another piece of paper and cut out.
  5. Use a craft knife to cut out flowers.
  6. Arrange the background paper, heart, and flowers on top of the card.
  7. Apply glue to the back of the background paper.
  8. Cut two equal lengths of ribbon.
  9. Glue the ends of the ribbons to either side of the card.
  10. Glue the background paper on top.
  11. Use a bit of liquid glue to secure.
  12. Glue the heart on the background.
  13. Attach the flowers last.
  14. Tie the ribbon into a bow and trim the ends.
  15. Use glue to secure the center of the bow.
  16. Attach embellishments around the border of the card.
