Hire the DivasQ: Is it worth it to hire exceptionally talented people who don’t always work well with others?Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt argues that companies should “hire the divas”:“If you read any management textbook, it says ‘don’t hire the divas’ because they’re nothing but a pain in the ass. And by the way, they are. But the people who are the divas—who believe—are the ones who will drive the culture and company to excellence. Steve Jobs was a diva. I worked with Bill Joy who was my colleague for many years—he’s an example of a diva. And I mean this in the most flattering way: they expect a lot, they drive people hard, they’re controversial, and they care passionately. If you find those people, you’re probably going to work for one so be nice to them.”However, he does not mean that you should tolerate arrogant jerks at your company. In their book, How Google Works, Eric Schmidt and Jonathan Rosenberg use the terms “divas” and “knaves” to distinguish between who you should tolerate and who you shouldn’t:“Knavish behavior is a product of low integrity; diva-ish behavior is one of high exceptionalism. Knaves prioritize the individual over the team; divas think they are better than the team, but want success equally for both. Knaves need to be dealt with as quickly as possible. But as long as their contributions match their outlandish egos, divas should be tolerated and even protected. Great people are often unusual and difficult, and some of those quirks can be quite off-putting. Since culture is about social norms and divas refuse to be normal, cultural factors can conspireto sweep out the divas along with the knaves. As long as people can figure out any way to work with the divas, and the divas’ achievements outweigh the collateral damage caused by their diva ways, you should fight for them. They will pay off your investment by doing interesting things.”Today I learn there are 2 types of them - The Diva or The Knaves. Which one are you?

If you've ever wondered what sets Google apart in the fiercely competitive tech landscape, look no further than a unique concept they coined—"Googleyness."👥 Who Created It?The concept of "Googleyness" was championed by Google's co-founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, with significant input from Silicon Valley's "coach," Bill Campbell. It was later formalized by Laszlo Bock, who became the SVP of People Operations at Google.📚 What Is It?"Googleyness" is a blend of intellectual curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to take risks. It's not just about how well you can code; it's about how you think, how you approach problems, and how well you align with Google's culture and values.📈 Short-Term OutcomeIn the short term, "Googleyness" helped Google attract some of the brightest minds in tech. The company quickly assembled a team of engineers who were not just technically proficient but also culturally aligned, leading to rapid innovation and the development of groundbreaking technologies like Google File System (GFS) and MapReduce.🌐 Long-Term OutcomeIn the long run, "Googleyness" has become the gold standard for tech recruitment and culture. It has contributed to Google's sustained leadership in the tech industry and has been instrumental in the development of iconic products like Gmail, Google News, and many more, some of which were born out of Google's famous "20% time" policy.📝 Modern-Day Lessons for CompaniesHire for Potential and Cultural Fit: Technical skills are important, but they're not everything. Look for candidates who fit your company culture and have the potential to grow.Foster Intellectual Curiosity: Create an environment where employees are encouraged to ask questions, explore new ideas, and take calculated risks.Invest in People Operations: Like Google, consider using data-driven methods to make your recruitment process more efficient and unbiased. At Anzy Global we believe that the concept of "Googleyness" serves as a timeless lesson for companies aiming to build a team that is not just talented but also incredibly aligned with their mission and values.#Googleyness #TechRecruitment #CompanyCulture #Innovation #TechFounders #Technologists

Google has a big problem. It's lost it's culture. Why do people do great things? Because they love where they work. And the culture is the people. People who want to do great things for a company they love working for. People who feel free to reach for lofty goals without fear that if they fail they'll get fired. People who buy into the vision of their leaders and find a way to work together to achieve greatness. Sure, money is nice. Free food and cool offices are great perks. But that's not culture. When you're looking over your shoulder waiting for an algorithm or a roll of the dice to say you're redundant, that's the antithesis of positive culture. When managers are hoarding resources and splitting employee HR and management reporting to game headcount reporting that's the culture of fear. When employees get fired for speaking out, that's the culture of oppression. When you no longer allow anonymous questions and the answers to employees in all hands are carefully scripted corp speak that's the culture of obfuscation. When employees are more concerned with toeing the corporate line and not innovating the result is debacles like the Gemini launch. Something's off in Mountainview. And it starts at the top. Is Sundar Google's Steve Ballmer? Time will tell.https://lnkd.in/ga38Jx_X

#Google's success story is a testament to the power of #teamwork and innovation. As the saying goes, great things in business are never done by one person but they're done by a team of people. This is a lesson that every aspiring entrepreneur should take to heart and embrace collaboration as a key ingredient for success.Larry Page and Sergey Brin's vision to rank search results according to their popularity revolutionized the way we searched the web. By creating an algorithm to tame the chaotic mass of the internet, they changed the game. Google's journey from a garage project to a tech giant is truly #inspiring. As Larry Page said, "My job as a leader is to make sure everybody in the company has great #opportunities, and that they feel they're having a meaningful impact and are contributing to the good of #society." This spirit of collaboration was evident in Google's early team members, whose dedication and hard work were instrumental in the company's success.Let us all learn from Google's success story and embrace #collaboration as a key ingredient for #success. Remember, great things are never done alone.
